Nerd notes:
by some copies, we'd be done already.
many old copies end at 14:23; others end at 15:23

why?
14 - Marcion doesn't like the jewish parts of 15. he cut it out according to rufinus (ad 400)
15 - seems like the church distributed a copy without the personal bits attached.
Information
1. Rom 15:1 - 15:21: Paul Works The Gentile Crowd
Paul wrote to remind, not because it's new (15:14-16)
as an apostle, he has authority...he teaches and reminds the church of the gospel

Paul specialized in reaching unreached Gentiles (15:17-21)
illyricum is former yugoslavia area...

note that paul knew what he called to do and did that (what he was good at?)

2. Rom 15:22 - 15:33: Paul wants to visit Spain (via Rome), as soon as he's finished with his cash delivery.
Paul wants to evangelize Spain with Rome's help (15:22-24)

But first, he needs to deliver the money from Greece/Macedonia to the Jews (15:25-29)
He's done this before...Acts 11:30 has him bringing money to Jerusalem from Antioch.
This second one is a practical way for the Gentiles to help the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem, and maybe help to unite the church (jew/gentile feuds not being uncommon).

Paul frequently defends material benefit from spiritual work, though he does not necessarily take the right himself all the time.

Paul requests prayer for the future (15:30-33)
Paul is concerned about what will happen when he is in Judea.
He prays for deliverence.
He doesn't get it.

3. Rom 16:1 - 16:25: Personal Notes
Hello to friends (16:1-16)
way better than a shout out in the liner notes...
and a holy kiss...

CRUSH SATAN RRAAGHH (16:17-20)
every now and again he really does hit it a bit odd.
we don't bear satan in mind though.

he is a real foe though. we should resist him, firm in our faith
here, avoiding dissensions and keeping obedient.

Benediction (16:21-25)

Application
'Specialize' in what you do best.
Don't make excuses for your failings by saying "That's not my gift".
But in terms of how you spend your life...figure out what you do that can help the church and do it.

If you pray for things and it doesn't work out, it doesn't mean God doesn't love you.
Paul and the church prayed for his deliverence; he didn't get it.
Instead, he ended up dead.

God clearly told him that this was his plan though (at some point into the affair) (27:24, an angel tells him "you'll stand before cesaer")
Just because bad things happen that don't seem to fit with God's plan, don't assume that it's not.

Remember your foe, Satan
you do have an adversary.
be confident though - God will crush satan. our part is to remain firm in our faith.

Review
What is the purpose of the book?

How would you walk through the major arguments of Romans?

Benediction: Rom 16 25-27
Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ,
according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages,
but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations,
according to the command of the eternal God,
to bring about the obedience of faith—
to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.
