Israel blows it
1. Idolatry
2 Kings 21:1-9, Ezekiel 23
2 Kings 21:1-9
1.Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hephzibah. 2.He did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD dispossessed before the sons of Israel. 3.For he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he erected altars for Baal and made an Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel had done, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. 4.He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, "In Jerusalem I will put My name." 5.For he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. 6.He made his son pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and used divination, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD provoking Him to anger. 7.Then he set the carved image of Asherah that he had made, in the house of which the LORD said to David and to his son Solomon, "In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever. 8. "And I will not make the feet of Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their fathers, if only they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that My servant Moses commanded them." 9.But they did not listen, and Manasseh seduced them to do evil more than the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the sons of Israel.
Ezekiel 23 (read on your own)

2. Immorality
1 Kings 14:22-24, Amos 2:6,7
1 Kings 14:22-24
Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked Him to jealousy more than all that their fathers had done, with the sins which they committed. 23.For they also built for themselves high places and sacred pillars and Asherim on every high hill and beneath every luxuriant tree. 24. There were also male cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD dispossessed before the sons of Israel.
Amos 2:6,7
"Thus says the Lord, 'For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment, because they sell the rightesous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals. These who pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the helpless also turn aside the way of the humble; and a man and his father resort to the same girl in order to profane my holy name."

3. Injustice
Amos 8:4-6, Isaiah 59:1-3
Amos 8:4-6
Hear this, you who trample the needy, to do away with the humble of the land, 5.saying, "When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales, 6. So as to buy the helpless for money And the needy for a pair of sandals, And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?"
Isaiah 59:1-3
Behold, the Lord's hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is his ear so dull that it cannot hear. But your inquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does nto hear. For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken falsehood, your tongue mutters wickedness.

What does this mean to God's plan?
God is holy (he will judge sin), but God also keeps his promises.

God sends prophets
Rather like judges isn't it?
Highpoint : David / Joshua
Lowpoint : 'every man did what was right in his own eyes'
God's representatives : Prophets / Judges

1. God promises judgement
Israel and Judah will be destroyed
1 Kings 14:15, 2 Kings 21:12-15, Jeremiah 5:14-17
1 Kings 14:15
"For the LORD will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and He will uproot Israel from this good land which He gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, because they have made their Asherim, provoking the LORD to anger.
Jeremiah 5:14-17
"Behold, I am bringing a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel," declares the LORD. "It is an enduring nation, It is an ancient nation, A nation whose language you do not know, Nor can you understand what they say. "Their quiver is like an open grave, All of them are mighty men. "They will devour your harvest and your food; They will devour your sons and your daughters; They will devour your flocks and your herds; They will devour your vines and your fig trees; They will demolish with the sword your fortified cities in which you trust.
2 Kings 21:12-15
therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, `Behold, I am bringing such calamity on Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle. `I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. `I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies, and they will become as plunder and spoil to all their enemies; because they have done evil in My sight, and have been provoking Me to anger since the day their fathers came from Egypt, even to this day.'
All nations will be judged
Isaiah 24 (esp 5,6), Zeph 3:8
Isaiah 24 (esp 5,6)
"The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statues, broke the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.
Zeph 3:8
"Therefore wait for Me," declares the LORD, "For the day when I rise up as a witness. Indeed, My decision is to gather nations, To assemble kingdoms, To pour out on them My indignation, All My burning anger; For all the earth will be devoured By the fire of My zeal.

2. God promises to keep his promises (restoration)
An eternal kingdom
Isaiah 9:6,7, Ezekiel 37:24-28
Isaiah 9:6,7
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
Ezekiel 37:24-28
"My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ordinances and keep My statutes and observe them. 25."They will live on the land that I gave to Jacob My servant, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they, and their sons and their sons' sons, forever; and David My servant will be their prince forever. 26. "I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever. 27. "My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. 28. "And the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.""'

Isaiah 19:19-25, Micah 4:1-3
Isaiah 19:19-25
In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD near its border. 20.It will become a sign and a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the LORD because of oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Champion, and He will deliver them. 21.Thus the LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the LORD in that day. They will even worship with sacrifice and offering, and will make a vow to the LORD and perform it. 22.The LORD will strike Egypt, striking but healing; so they will return to the LORD, and He will respond to them and will heal them. 23.In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians. 24.In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25.whom the LORD of hosts has blessed, saying, "Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance."
Micah 4:1-3
And it will come about in the last days That the mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains. It will be raised above the hills, And the peoples will stream to it. 2.Many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 3. And He will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks;Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war.

3. God promises an end to sin and separation (redemption)
Zeph 3:13, Ezekial 36:22-37
Zeph 3:13
"The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble."
Ezekial 36:22-37
22."Therefore say to the house of Israel, `Thus says the Lord GOD, "It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. 23. "I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD," declares the Lord GOD, "when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight. 24. "For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land. 25."Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26. "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27."I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. 28."You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God. 29."Moreover, I will save you from all your uncleanness; and I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I will not bring a famine on you. 30."I will multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field, so that you will not receive again the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31."Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and your abominations. 32."I am not doing this for your sake," declares the Lord GOD, "let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel!" 33.`Thus says the Lord GOD, "On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places will be rebuilt. 34."The desolate land will be cultivated instead of being a desolation in the sight of everyone who passes by. 35."They will say, `This desolate land has become like the garden of Eden; and the waste, desolate and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.' 36."Then the nations that are left round about you will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted that which was desolate; I, the LORD, have spoken and will do it."

Application
1. Culture is evil; don't be surprised (Man is sinful)
Culture is not worse now than it ever has been. Culture is human, and is therefore sinful.
We are called to purity in the midst of impurity; this is not new for humanity or for righteous men/women.
(though cultures do get better and worse - ours is worse than some and better than others)
2. Righteousness is often outnumbered and is often persecuted but always exists (God is loving)
No matter how bad the culture is, righteousness (the godly thread) always survives.
That does not mean that the righteous don't suffer (both as a result of shared judgement and persecution).
Isaiah - supposed to have been sawn in half.
Jeremiah - imprisoned (Jer 32), thrown in a cistern (Jer 38)
Ezekiel - taken to sunny Babylon, wife dies as a sign (Ezekial 24)
3. The way things work often doesn't make sense (God is not in a hurry, God is in charge)
God's nation descends to enormous sin - somehow this fits within God's plan (see 1 Kings 14 against Israel, etc). This has repurcusions not only for God's 'plan' but also for God's people living through the depravity and resulting judgement.
Things may seem out of God's control - to the point where our question is 'How could God allow...'.
God has in fact given us reason to trust however - our timeline just needs to expand.
