John 16:5-15 - Jesus promises to send 'a helper', the Holy Spirit, who will work within the world and God's people (the church).
To the Church, the Holy Spirit brings :
John 16:5-15 5. "But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, `Where are You going?'
6."But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7."But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away,
the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8."And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
9.concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10.and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
11.and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12."I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13."But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He
will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
14."He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
15."All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
New Family
(Eph 2:11-22, 1 John 3:23-24)
Eph 2:11-22 11.Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called
"Uncircumcision" by the so-called "Circumcision," which is performed in the flesh by human hands--
12.remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and
strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13.But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14.For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,
15.by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that
in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace,
16.and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
17.AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR;
18.for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
19.So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household,
20.having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone,
21.in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord,
22.in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
1 John 3:23-24 23.This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ,
and love one another, just as He commanded us.
24.The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us,
by the Spirit whom He has given us.
We are made members of a new family, united by the task of loving each other more than ourselves.
Sanctification
(Rom 8:9-11, Col 3:8-11, Gal 5:22-26)
Rom 8:9-11 9.However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit
of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
10.If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11.But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Col 3:8-11 8.But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and
abusive speech from your mouth.
9.Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,
10.and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image
of the One who created him--
11.a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, k
barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.
Gal 5:22-26 22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23. gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
24. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
26. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
We are made to be more like Christ.
Gifts
(1 Cor 12:12-26)
1 Cor 12:12-26 12.For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members
of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13.For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14.For the body is not one member, but many.
15.If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason
any the less a part of the body.
16.And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason
any the less a part of the body.
17.If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
18.But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
19.If they were all one member, where would the body be?
20.But now there are many members, but one body.
21.And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
22.On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
23.and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and
our less presentable members become much more presentable,
24.whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more
abundant honor to that member which lacked,
25.so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
26.And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
We are made to help out the rest of the Church ("God has so composed the body...that the members may have the same care
for one another").
