teaching notes : 1 cor. 11:2 - 11:16
theme : head coverings
outline
11:2 traditions
11:3 christ head of man, man head of woman, god head of christ
11:4-7 head coverings for women not men
11:4 disgrace for men to have one
11:5 disgrace for women not to have one
11:6 if no headcovering for women, it is as though her head was shaved
11:7 men ought not to wear headcoverings since man is over woman
11:8 man does not originate from women but women from man (eve from adam)
11:9 eve was created for adam not vice versa
11:10 ??? therefore a woman should have a headcovering because of the angels ???
11:11,12 the equality of men and women
11:11 man is not independent of woman nor woman of man
11:12 man also has his origin in woman
11:13-15 head coverings again...
11:13 judge for yourselves : is it proper to not have a headcovering?
11:14 does not nature teach that long hair is a dishonor to man?
11:15 long hair is a glory to women
11:16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice
note : traditions here isn't along the lines of turkey at thanksgiving; it is more in tune to truth handed down in a doctrine sense however, i would argue that the verse serves as a transition from the section on meat/idols to one of liturgy (which covers through chap 14); the traditions here spoken of are most likely the patterns and doctrines of church practice.
1. headcoverings
comments :
my desire is have this be a cultural reading, so please filter my arguments carefully...

v4 disgrace for men to have one
v5 disgrace for women not to have one
v6 if no headcovering for women, it is as though her head was shaved
v7 men ought not to wear headcoverings since man is over woman
c. other considerations

2. women and men
a. subordinate in role (as christ to the father)
11:3 christ -> man, man -> woman, god -> christ please notice the care that paul takes to express the womans role as similar to that of christ!

b. equal (as christ to the father)
pauls pattern of establishing both role and equality...
